Ernest Thompson Seton. Life-Histories of Northern Animals. An Account of the Animals of Manitoba. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1909.

2 volumes, 4to. Illustrated with 68 maps and 560 drawings by Seton. Original light brown buckram, upper covers decorated with central gilt-stamped animal device, gilt-lettered leather spine labels, top edges gilt, others uncut.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. INSCRIBED BY SETON in red ink on a prospectus for the work mounted on front free endpaper of the first volume: "My magnum opus at last / E. T. S." Additionally WITH AN ORIGINAL DRAWING mounted on front pastedown in Vol. I depicting a bear seated from behind in ink and wash, inscribed: "To Will S. Coffin / with kind regards of Ernest Thompson Seton / 1909." William E. Coffin was Chairman of the Honors and Medals Committee of the Camp Fire Club, and a mutual friend of Theodore Roosevelt and Ernest Thompson Seton. In a letter at the Library of Congress written to Roosevelt, May 26, 1911, Coffin fondly recalls the hours spent at Sagamore Hill with Roosevelt and Ernest Thompson Seton.

Seton's monumental illustrated natural history provides scientific classification of people, animals, and events. It incorporates findings from other naturalists, such as Sir John Richardson, alongside Seton's firsthand observations from his own Arctic canoe trip. The first volume is devoted to herbivores, and the second carnivores.

Condition: Some wear and scratches to spine labels (particularly Vol. II, with some loss), minor soiling or toning to cloth; internally very clean.

Provenance: William S. Coffin (presentation inscription on mounted drawing); Trelsie Lucas (pencil signature on front endpapers). From the William A. Strutz Library.
