Description

John Gay. Polly: An Opera, being the second part of the Beggar's Opera. London: Printed for the Author, 1729.

4to (c. 250 x 183 mm ). Preliminary blank; title printed in red and black; 32 pp. of engraved music. Later calf-backed boards, upper and lower margins uncut; cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION of the sequel to The Beggar's Opera (1728), which had great success and launched a new vogue for musical dramas featuring low-life characters. Besides the famous Polly Peachum, the characters here include Trapse, Flimzy, Vanderbluff, some Indians, and some pirates; much of the action takes place at sea in the West Indies. The Lord Chamberlain denied permission for it to be played in public, which resulted Gay publishing it privately.

Condition: Some minor scuffing to leather spine; a few bumps to boards. Some minor pale spotting to title and initial blank, otherwise quite clean and fresh.

References: Metzdorf 1069.

Provenance: Arthur John Dorman (bookplate); purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, Inc., 8 June 1972. From the William A. Strutz Library.
