Crane records that The Spiral Press printed 7,000 copies over 21 varying names (imprints) of this 1956 Christmas poem, the first appearance of "Kitty Hawk." After this first appearance of the poem, Frost revised it three times, the final revised version provided the central theme for Frost's last book, In the Clearing (1962). Here, Frost transmits one of each of the 21 variations. The names include his own; his daughter and son-in-law, Lesley Frost and Joseph W. Ballantine; other family members; his typographer and wife, Ann & Joseph Blumenthal; his publisher, Henry Holt and Company; the artist and wife, Leona & Antonio Frasconi; and others.

Lawrance Thompson (1906-1973) was an English professor and noted academic. He authored numerous books on American poets, including a three-part biography of Robert Frost. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Biography in 1971 for the second part of his biography of Frost.
