8vo. Title-page printed in red and black; 4 pages of publishers advertisements dated March 1, 1850 at front. Original brown blind-embossed cloth, gilt-lettered on spine; quarter morocco slipcase.

FIRST EDITION OF HAWTHORNE'S MOST CELEBRATED WORK. Despite the controversial subject matter, The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success, raising Hawthorne out of literary obscurity. 2,500 copies were sold in its first week of publication. The present copy contains Clark's State x1 of pp. 321-322, and State a1 of copyright notice (no priority determined since the settings were machined simultaneously). A VERY FINE AND BRIGHT COPY.

Condition: Slight wear to spine extremities; touch of wear to board corners; slight rubbing to covers, with a few very minor pale spots.
