[Samuel Johnson]. Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi. Letters to and from the Late Samuel Johnson, LL.D. To which are added some Poems never before printed. London: Printed for A. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1788.

2 volumes, 8vo. Contemporary speckled sheep.

FIRST EDITION. Inscribed on the title of Vol. I in an unknown hand on wider section at top of sheet (folded) before binding: "Nil mihi rescribas then ipsa veni, sie labitur atas, & soon I must die. To Piozzi you've married, adieu learned dame, you have wounded my heart, & will wound too my fame." These lines form the last stanza of a satirical poem on her book written at the time, entitled "The Quintessence of Johnson's Letters to Mrs. Piozzi." See A. M. Broadley, Doctor Johnson and Mrs. Thrale, London, 1910, p. 118.

Condition: Rebacked in sheep to style; some rubbing and minor edgewear to covers. Lacking initial blank [A]1 and errata slip in Vol. I.
