Presentation copy to his lover, Dorothy Glover
Graham Greene. The Quiet American. London: William
Heinemann, [1955].8vo. Publisher's dark blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt. Original color pictorial dust jacket.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY GREENE TO "DOROTHY" on the front free endpaper: "For Dorothy / with a lot of love / from Graham."
"Dorothy" is almost certainly Dorothy Glover, with whom Greene had an affair during and shortly after WWII. The pair published four children's books together, authored by Greene and illustrated by Glover (released under her pseudonym "Dorothy Craigie"). After the war and the affair ended, the pair remained friends, bonded over their mutual affection for Victorian detective fiction. In 1966, the pair issued a catalogue of their joint collection, appropriately titled Victorian Detective Fiction.
Condition: Minor edgewear. Scattered foxing to endpapers. Dust jacket unclipped (13s 6d), spine panel sunned, somewhat toned, some scuffs.
