First printing of this Faulkner work, twice signed, and inscribed to lifelong friend Herb Starr

Random House, [1948].8vo. Publisher's black cloth stamped in blue and gold. Original illustrated dust jacket. Quarter morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, PRESENTATION COPY. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED TWICE BY THE AUTHOR, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Herb Starr. / with best regards / Bill Faulkner / Oxford, Miss / 5 October 1948." Also signed on the title page: "William Faulkner / Oxford, Miss / 5 October 1948."
Hubert (Herb) Starr, noted Hollywood attorney, first met Faulkner while Starr was attending Yale Law School. Faulkner was visiting his childhood friend Phil Stone, who was also studying law at Yale. Faulkner and Stone grew up together in Oxford, Mississippi, and stayed friends throughout their lives. Starr and Faulkner crossed paths again in California, where Faulkner stayed with Starr when he first moved to Hollywood. Starr also advised Faulkner on Hollywood and film matters. Faulkner, who rarely inscribed or even signed his books, inscribed fourteen books to Herb Starr over the years.
Condition: A few minor stains to title. Dust jacket unclipped ($3.00), minor wear, small abrasion to rear flap, small tape repair to verso, but unusually vibrant and well preserved.

Provenance: Herb Starr (presentation inscription); acquired from House of Books, Ltd., New York, in 1976 (House of Books purchased Starr's collection of inscribed Faulkner books from Starr's widow in the 1970s). From the William A. Strutz Library.
