Description
[Winston S. Churchill]. Randolph S. Churchill, compiler. Arms and the Covenant: Speeches by The Right Hon. Winston S. Churchill, C.H. M.P. London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., [1938].8vo. Frontispiece portrait of Winston Churchill. Publisher's blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt, front board ruled in blind.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WINSTON CHURCHILL on the front free endpaper: "To / G. C. Mason / from / Winston Churchill." And written in ink in another hand: "July 1938."
"G. C. Mason" appears to have been one of Churchill's bankers. He was employed by Lloyds Bank and the Churchill Archives holds a handful of letters between Mason, Churchill, and Churchill's personal secretary, Violet Pearman. We have located at least one other volume inscribed by Churchill to the same recipient. Most notably, a Bloomington, Illinois newspaper reported (in an article about the short-lived Winston Churchill College in Pontiac, Illinois) that the second Churchill painting to be auctioned in the United States, "Menaggio, Lake Como", was sold by one "G. C. Mason, to whom Sir Winston had given the painting in 1946." The painting sold for a record-setting $39,200 in 1965, in a landmark first trans-Atlantic art auction held by Sotheby's and Parke-Bernet. The present inscription is undoubtably to the same recipient.
Condition: Spine a bit sunned; a few scuffs and stains to cloth. Some offsetting to half-title; textblock lightly toned.
References: Woods A44(a).
Provenance: G. C. Mason (presentation inscription); "Peter" (inscription from G. C. Mason, dated "Cornotation Day 2/6/53" on White Lodge, 66, Sevenoaks Road, Orpington, Kent letterhead laid-in). From the William A. Strutz Library.
