Sir Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (1897-1977), had a storied career as a politician in 20th-century Great Britain. He served as Foreign Secretary three times, including during both WWII and the Cold War. He was a trusted deputy of then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who appointed Eden Secretary of State for War, and, in 1955, Eden succeeded Churchill as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Of the three volumes that comprise his memoirs, the present volume, The Reckoning, "deals with the span of time extending from my resignation as Foreign Secretary in Mr. Chamberlain's Government to the end of the second world war," (Forward).

Provenance: Clementine Ogilvy Spencer-Churchill (presentation inscription); thence by family descent; acquired from James Cummins Bookseller, New York, in 2000. From the William A. Strutz Library.
