More Information:

"A tour of the Great Plains in 1846 seems hardly a means to regaining health and vigor, but with this goal in mind young Parkman, in fragile health and in danger of losing his eyesight, set out. His daily notes became the material for his first book.. Upon his return, Parkman found his health and eyesight no better than before, but he persisted in his writing and produced the first installment of a serialized version of his adventures for the Knickerbocker in February of 1847, entitled 'The Oregon Trail, Or a Summer's Journey Out of Bounds, by a Bostonian.' The installments continued in the magazine through 1847 and 1848, concluding in the issue of February, 1849, and in the meantime Parkman was busily revising his text for publication as a book." - Wagner-Camp, page 351.
