Description
Sir Thomas Browne. Hydriotaphia, Urne-buriall, or a Discourse of the Sepulchrall Urnes lately found in Norfolk. Together with the Garden of Cyrus. London: for Henry Brome, 1658.8vo (160 x 102 mm). 3 engraved illustrations (2 full-page), separate title-page to The Garden of Cyrus, with 2 pp. "The Stationer to the Reader" leaf, leaf of publisher's advertisements and longitudinal half-title to Garden of Cyrus at end. Contemporary blind-ruled English sheep; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of Browne's masterpiece of rhetoric. "The composition of Hydriotaphia was suggested to Browne by the discovery near Norwich of a group of cinerary urns of late Roman date. Around this theme he has woven a tissue of solemn reflections in his most luxuriant manner, and the essay is accounted by some to be the supreme example of his art... The first edition... in octavo is an uncommon and attractive book" (Keynes).
This copy has the longitudinal half-title, the leaf of publisher's advertisements, as well as the two-page "The Stationer to the Reader" leaf at end. According to Keynes, a minority of copies contain the errata, which is a slip pasted onto leaf O1 (not present in this copy).
Condition: Rebacked preserving portions of original spine; corner tips and small leather losses on upper cover repaired; rear cover dampstained and slightly bowed. Lacking errata leaf (as often); some marginal dampstaining at end; fore-margin of leaf M4 with internal tear and creasing; some lower corners curled in the latter work; occasional ink blots or smudges; minor soiling; numerous early marginal notations throughout, and some early ink notations and geometric diagrams on free endpapers.
References: Grolier, Wither to Prior 108; Keynes, Browne 93; Pforzheimer 110; Wing B-5154.
Provenance: T. Willughby (early signature on title); purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, Inc., New York, 1 July 1971. From the William A. Strutz Library.
