morall... Newly enlarged. London: John Haviland for Hanna
Barret, and Richard Whitaker, 1625.Quarto (198 x 141mm). With later engraved portrait of Bacon inserted as frontispiece; title within double-ruled border with printer's ornament, woodcut and metalcut headpieces and decorative initials, text within printed ruled border. Late 19th-century dark blue morocco gilt, covers paneled in gilt, spine gilt-decorated, edges gilt, by F. Bedford; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF BACON'S ESSAYS, FIRST ISSUE, with the title bearing the Barret and Whitaker imprint and the words "Newly enlarged." This edition contains fifty-eight essays and is the text most commonly used for modern editions, and was the last to appear in Bacon's lifetime. "It contains fifty-eight essays and is the text most commonly reprinted today. For this reason the present edition ranks in importance with the first of 1597" (Pforzheimer). Bacon writes in the dedication of this edition: "I doe now publish my Essayes; which, of all my other workes, have beene most Currant: For that, as it seemes, they come home, to Mens Businesse, and Bosomes. I have enlarged them, both in Number, and Weight; So that they are indeed a New Worke."
Condition: Lacking initial blank (A1). A very fine, wide-margined copy.
