[Benjamin McCulloch]. Autograph Letter Signed Questioning the Loyalty of a Clerk Said to Have Harbored Ben McCulloch. One page with integral blank, 5.25" x 8", August 6, 1861, to Joseph Barrett, in part: "It has been represented...that Allen Thompson a clerk in your office harbored Ben McCulloch when he was here some months ago. His loyalty is suspected from...circumstance & perhaps for other reasons." Four days after this letter was written, McCulloch was engaged in the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Missouri. Folds. Toning around edges and pencil notation written on the back from a previous collector.

More Information: Benjamin McCulloch (1811-1862) was a Texas Ranger, soldier in the Texas Revolution, U.S. marshal, and a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. He was shot and killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge [Arkansas, March 7, 1862].
