Description
Geronimo: A Signed Cabinet Photo of the Feared Apache Leader. This rare photo was taken in 1903 while the man whom Gen. Nelson Miles dubbed the "Human Tiger" was a prisoner at Fort Sill in Oklahoma Territory, and was copyrighted by Collins of Lawton, Oklahoma Territory. It is a marvelous image of Geronimo as an old man, still proud and defiant. This cabinet photo is accompanied by a wonderful 1904 letter in which the writer describes its acquisition at Lawton. The writer goes on to describe an actual meeting with Geronimo, arranged by Lt. Scott, during which he procured the Apache leader's autograph on the photo at a cost of 25 cents. Of the transaction the writer opined, "He charged me a quarter dollar for his signature so he must be getting somewhat civilized".The photo itself is in very nice condition, marred only by single tack hole in the center of the top border. Geronimo has signed in pencil vertically in his crude block-letter style, running down the right mount border from the upper right-hand corner. Because of the dark color of the mount, the pencil writing is very hard to see, but on careful inspection is entirely visible. 5" x 8".
