Description
"...I will fight no more forever."
Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce: Glass Negative. This 5" x 7"
wet plate glass negative depicts Chief Joseph (1840-1904), leader
of the Nez Perce tribe. He was among those who refused to accede to
demands by Washington to relinquish their tribal lands and relocate
to a vastly smaller reservation in Idaho. He engaged in skirmishes
with troops led by General Oliver Howard, was refused asylum by the
Crow tribe, and attempted to find refuge in Canada. He surrender to
General Nelson Miles on October 5, 1877, in the Bear Paw Mountains
of Montana. In his statement, he decried the hardships endured by
his people and their losing battle against the elements and
superior forces, concluding: "I will fight no more forever." He
generally acted as a mediator and proponent of peaceful, negotiated
solutions. This photo was taken by C. M. Bell of Washington, D.C.,
during Joseph's visit to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1879.
Bell took photos of each member of the Indian delegation as well as
a group shot of all the delegates. Outside of two light scratches
in the background, it is in excellent condition and could likely be
used to print fine images.
