Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill: Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, Presentation Copy Inscribed and Signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, December 1942. Limited edition of 100 copies of which this is #76. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt to his friend, Toi Bachelder, who served as the President's primary secretary from 1933-1945, "For Toi Bachelder with the affectionate regards of her old friend Franklin D. Roosevelt, Christmas 1942." Small, slim quarto. 56 pages. Vellum-backed marbled paper boards. Gilt-stamped dark blue leather spine label. Top edge gilt. In original slipcase. The first wartime White House Christmas book which contains seven major war addresses including FDR's December 8, 1941 "Date of Infamy" speech, asking for a declaration of war against Japan. Includes the fold-out facsimile of the "Declaration by United Nations" which pledged cooperation against the Tripartite Pact.
Toi Bachelder, also a polio victim, first met the future President at a Warm Springs, Georgia natural spa in 1925, when she was fourteen years old. She was assigned to be his bridge partner and the two became fast friends from that moment. She joined the White House staff following Roosevelt's inauguration in 1933 and continued working there for Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, before retiring in 1967. Lyndon Johnson was so impressed with her service that he gave her a private retirement party in the White House. Over the years, FDR and Toi were trusted friends.
These specially bound copies were given as gifts exclusively to the President's closest friends, family, and select members of the White House staff and are rarely encountered, with only four other inscribed copies found offered for auction in the past forty years. A desirable copy with a warm, personal association to President Roosevelt. The book is accompanied by a small color photograph of Ms. Bachelder holding this book.
Condition: Spine vellum slightly smudged, with some chipping of the spine label. Slipcase somewhat darkened along the edges.
