Caroline Affair: Print of George Tattersall's The Destruction of the Caroline. By British artist and engraver George Tattersall, Destruction of The Caroline, Steamboat, by Fire at the Falls of Niagara, Upper Canada, Occurred on the Night of Friday the 29th. Dec. 1837, the print shows the destruction from the British attack on the steamboat on the Niagara River, before sending it over the falls in a fiery fashion. The drawing measures 13 ½" x 15", engraved by J. [John] Harris. Published in London, 13th Feby 1838 by R. Ackermann, at his eclipse sporting gallery, 191 Regent Street.

The Caroline Affair was an event that almost brought the US into another war during the 19th century due to diplomatic issues between the US and Britain, due to the British attacking a US ship on US territory. The 1842 Webster-Ashburn Treaty allowed for there to be a cease in tensions between the two nations, with the British acknowledging their wrongdoings.

Condition: Light toning to sheet around the drawing. Minor edge wear. Light damp staining to the bottom two corners, otherwise, fine.
