Description

William Henry Harrison: Anti-Free Soil Party Cartoon. A very scarce cartoon illustrating the underhanded tactics to which the Free Soil Party is willing to engage to smear the reputation of William Henry Harrison. On left, Martin Van Buren is seen on a wagon confidently riding towards Washington and belittling Harrison for his military achievements. At center, Harrison is seated on a barrel of Hard Cider offering hospitality to his visitors while shrewdly hinting that although he is a simple man and backwoodsman, he knows "how a red coat looks from behind." At right, His visitors, American journalist and Van Buren supporter Frances Preston Blair tells his associate how they should take "this old Granny" up on his invitation hoping during conversation to gain some dirt on him to use against him in the papers. 12 3/4" x 18 1/2" the cartoon is untitled and no publisher is credited. The item has been cleaned and rice paper backed and presents very well.
