Description
[John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy]: Edward H. Lehman Original 1963 White House Blue Room Painting. Original artwork by Edward H. Lehman of the White House Blue Room. This White House Blue Room painting was intended to be the 1964 White House Christmas gift print. Accomplished in watercolor and gouache on board. 19" x 15.5", beautifully matted and framed to overall dimensions of 27.25" x 23.25". The painting depicts the sumptuous furnishings and architectural details of the White House Blue Room, which was designed by Stephane Boudin, who returned many of the original furnishings to the room after decades of absence. The painting features an overall view of the room with its central table purchased by James Monroe in 1817, French Empire crystal chandelier, and distinctive Pierre-Antoine Bellangé Bergeres and Fauteuils (armchairs), the blue, gold and pink French Empire Savonnerie type carpet, sapphire blue draperies, candelabra, side tables, and portrait wall paintings. Signed and dated at the lower right, "Ed Lehman 63."The 1962 reproduction of Lehman's Red Room picture was such a success, that the First Lady wished to continue the series for future gift prints. In the Spring of 1963 she asked the artist to return to the White House to consider painting the newly renovated Blue Room and Green Room. In Mary Evans Seeley's book Season's Greetings from the White House, she writes, "In the last week of August, Ed Lehman came to the White House [with] the finished painting of the Blue Room that the First Lady intended to use for the 1964 Christmas gift. Pamela Turnure met Lehman and extended an invitation from the President and First Lady to spend Christmas in Virginia at the Kennedy's newly built home near Rattlesnake Mountain. They wanted Lehman, if he was interested, to paint the First Family around their Christmas tree. The prospect was exciting and Lehman agreed. The President arrived shortly and greeting the artist with comments of admiration for the newest painting, 'The Blue Room is my favorite of the public rooms,' the President said. The events of November, however, ended the possibilities for either a family portrait or a 1964 Christmas print."
A poignant reminder of what could have been, had not the events in Dallas forever ended the Kennedy Camelot White House.
Condition: Artwork appears Very fine. A few light scuffs to the frame. Not inspected out of frame.
