Description
John F. Kennedy: Typed Letter Draft with Holographic Edits in His Hand Two pages, 8.5" x 11", Washington; January 4, 1961. A letter addressed to Eleanor Roosevelt that reads, in part, "I was distressed to learn that you had informed Governor Stevenson that you would prefer not to serve as a full-time member of the United Nations Mission to the United Nations, but I, of course, fully respect your wishes. I would, however, like to make an alternate suggestion. It is my thought that if you agree to serve as Senior Advisor to our Mission to the United Nations, a schedule could be worked out by you and Governor Stevenson which would not interfere materially with your other commitments... It is my earnest hope that you will be able to accept this assignment. I am confident that Governor Stevenson will enthusiastically join me in this request for your assistance." Kennedy's holographic edits include the phrase "Ambassador" below the date as well as crossing out the last sentence to change it to, "Governor Stevenson enthusiastically joins me in this request for your assistance." Accompanied by a typed transcription of Kennedy's edits and a letter of provenance from his personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offering further contextualization.Lincoln writes, "This is a corrected letter by President-elect John F. Kennedy on January 4, 1961. The handwritten notation under the date at the top is 'Ambassador.' Kennedy called Governor Stevenson the next morning and told him of his corrections so that he could write the letter to Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt for his (Kennedy's) signature."
Condition: Lightly toned and creased along folds. Diagonal crease along right margin of the first page.
