California Governor Pat Brown: Typed Statement with Holographic Edits in John F. Kennedy's Hand. One page on the back of John F. Kennedy for President letterhead, 8" x 11", [Los Angeles]; [July 13, 1960]. Typed draft of a statement to be made by California Governor Pat Brown. The draft reads (with holographic changes in bold), "1. I am not asking this delegation to indicate their individual preferences today. I have called you together to hear my views on the situation. I can assure the members that I will call another meeting of the delegation within the next day or so, sometime before the nominating begins, in which the members of the delegation can make known their individual views, I think by then who will all have a clearer view of our situation. 2. I can also assure you that I will make my final decision known to you sometime before the nominating session on the matter of my name going before the Convention and my judgment will be motivated on what I feel will be for the best interests not only for my own State of California, but also for the Nation." Accompanied by a letter of provenance by Kennedy's personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offering further contextualization.Lincoln writes that the notes were written by Kennedy "in a meeting with Governor Pat Brown of California in the Biltmore Hotel during the Democratic National Convention on July 13, 1960. At the end of their discussion Brown dictated a statement he would make to the press. These hand-written notes, with Brown's consent, are Kennedy's modifications."
Condition: Toned throughout with Lincoln's pencil notations at the top right corner.
