Description

John F. Kennedy: Autograph Notes. Five notes each written on United States Senate letterhead, 6" x 8.75", Washington; [January 1958]. Notes made by the senator during a meeting of the Foreign Relations Committee. They read, in part, "evaluation - prevail - do you accept that assumption / sustenance of gap? / number of missiles / Russian / U.S. / missiles / anti-missiles missiles / Soviet emphasis on air defense / maintenance of Berlin by lift / 10 thousand tons / radio & radar." Accompanied by a letter of provenance written by Kennedy's private secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offering further contextualization.

According to Lincoln, the notes correspond to meetings discussing the budget. However, they also reference responses to what would become the Berlin Crisis of 1958 - 1959 in which the status of West Berlin was thrown into question. In early 1958, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev became increasingly annoyed that the U.S. was placing nuclear missiles at West German bases. In response, Khrushchev offered an ultimatum that put U.S. access to West Berlin in jeopardy. If the U.S., the U.K., and France could not agree to a peace treaty with West Germany, East Germany, and the U.S.S.R., the Soviet Union would conclude a treaty with East Germany, preventing Allied powers from accessing West Berlin. The conflict was not resolved until the following year.

Condition: Lightly toned, otherwise in good condition.
