Description
John F. Kennedy: Typed Letter with Holographic Edits in His Hand. One page on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 8.75", Washington; November 2, 1962. Addressed to Tennessee senator, Albert Gore, Sr., the letter reads (with holographic changes in bold), "I appreciate your kind words that you expressed in your speech in Cookeville. I was glad to see what you said about the United Nations. It has many faults, but as the events of the past two weeks demonstrated, we could not get along with it. I am glad you are there." Accompanied by a copy of a letter of provenance written by Kennedy's private secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offering further contextualization.Kennedy wrote this letter in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Throughout the conflict, the United Nations played a critical role in de-escalating and resolving the standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union. In particular, Kennedy relied on UN Secretary-General, U Thant. Thant served as an important intermediary between the two nations from the moment the quarantine began. Though his actions have largely been forgotten in modern history, Thant received many accolades immediately following the resolution of the crisis.
Condition: Lightly toned with two staple holes in the upper left corner that have small corresponding stains.
