Description
John F. Kennedy: Typed Letter with Holographic Edits in His Hand. One page on White House letterhead, 6.75" x 8.75", Washington; November 2, 1962. A letter addressed to William F. Knowland, former U.S. senator and assistant publisher of the Oakland Tribune, that reads (with holographic changes in bold), "Thank you for your note and for sending me your editorial. These are matters that are of great concern to us. Our first problem, however, is to secure the evacuation of the missiles. It may be of interest to you to know that when I was a young boy I memorized the Rudyard Kipling's poem quoted in your article and I remember well the words today."A California conservative, Knowland's political career spanned both state and national elections throughout the 1930s to the 1950s. After Knowland failed to win the California governorship in 1958, he retired from politics and served as the editor-in-chief and publisher of his father's newspaper, the Oakland Tribune. Here, Kennedy refers to Knowland's most recent article on the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Condition: Lightly toned, more so along the margins. The upper left corner is clipped and there is a slight stain at the top margin just above the letterhead.
