Description

[Abraham Lincoln] Pair of 1860 Anti-Slavery Political Pamphlets. (1) 5.5" x 8.25" pamphlet titled "The Fanaticism of the Democratic Party. Speech of Hon. Owen Lovejoy, of Illinois, Delivered in the U. S. House of Representatives, February 21, 1859." An anti-slavery speech which concludes: "I bid you defiance in the name of my God!" Washington, D.C., Buell & Blanchard, 1860, 8 pages. Spine reinforced with postage-stamp hinging tape. (2) 6.5" x 8.75" pamphlet titled "Speech of Hon. O. H. Browning, Delivered at the Republican Mass-Meeting, Springfield, Ill., August 8th, 1860." Quincy Whig and Republican Steam Power Press Print, 1860, 16 pages. Lincoln attended this event and a footnote on the first page says "Mr. Lincoln had just been upon the stand from which Mr. Browning spoke." Lincoln would have certainly relished Browning's speech which focused on Henry Clay's political philosophy, taking the position that Clay would have supported the Republican platform and Lincoln. Not in Monaghan. Partially uncut with some separation to the pages. From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
