Description

Thomas Nast Children's Block Puzzle with Letter. A wonderful children's puzzle game that can be assembled into six different scenes. The puzzle comes with all thirty original 1.5", four-sided, paper-covered wooden block cubes. They are contained in the original 9.75" x 11.5" wooden box missing the cover/top. The puzzle game (circa late 1880s) in fine condition also comes with a 12" x 15" framed print, illustrating each of the six different completed puzzle scenes. Finally, included with the game and print is a marvelous letter on letterhead from the editor of the Evening Post to Thomas Nast rejecting Nast's request to submit cartoons to the publication. The editor, Mr. Gorkin, takes a surprisingly high-brow position explaining that cartoons would contribute to a "lowering of the character" of the publication. Nast, in written response to the rejection, although clearly insulted by the "lowering of character" remark, diplomatically expresses his disappointment toward the editor using his knack for satire saying, "someday I may be able to throw some light on his kin to God like character" (thereby threatening a cartoon devoted to blasting the editor of the Evening Post!) A great letter!
