Description

Robert E. Lee: War-Time "1st Floppy Tie" Salt Print Attributed to Julian Vannerson. 5.25" x 7.25" oval salt print affixed to the original 8" x 10" mount. No imprint or credit, but attributed to Julian Vannerson. Post-war versions appear with back marks of Vannerson & Jones and William Davies of the Lee Gallery. This is by far the rarest of the three poses taken as part of the so-called "floppy tie" series. There are only subtle differences between the three. In this, the first pose, both sides of Lee's tie are rigidly straight, even pointing upward a bit. Sunning and toning to mount along with some scattered spots in the background, not affecting Lee's portrait.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
