Description

[Samuel Clemens] Mark Twain: 1879 Silk Program for the Thirteenth Annual Banquet of the Society of Army of the Tennessee. Cream silk broadside program with gold and white fringe, 3 3/4" x 10 3/4"; Chicago [Illinois]; November 13, 1879. The banquet, held at the Palmer House Hotel, was attended by Generals Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan, as well as 600 Civil War veterans, both Union and Confederate. Twain gave the fifteenth and final toast, sometime after 3 AM, to "The Babies."

Condition: Moderately toned and soiled with scattered dampstaining. Fragile, with separations and some loss along top and bottom margins.
