Description

John Rogers Sculpture: The Fugitive's Story. 22" tall painted plaster sculpture signed John Rogers/ New York Patented September 7, 1869. Those involved in the underground railway of the abolitionist movement much favored this group portraying three of the most notable proponents of the movement. Standing behind the desk are Rev. Henry Ward Beecher (brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe), John Greenleaf Whittier the renowned poet, and seated is William Lloyd Garrison, journalist and reformer. They are listening intently as a slave woman gives her account of her escape. John Rogers measured all the figures to assure correct proportions. Sketches and photographs as well as life masks contributed to the likenesses of Rev. Beecher and Mr. Garrison. The three men declared the group to be excellent portraits of themselves.

There is scattered loss on the base, and some cracks on Whittier's right leg. Looks to have been repainted. Overall a fine example of this seldom offered Rogers Group, which by its subject matter is one of the most sought-after Rogers sculptures. This is the first example we have ever offered.
