Description
[Fort Sumter]. Two Large Photographs of Fort Sumter, Including One from April 15, 1861, the Day after Major Anderson's Surrender.1) The first photograph, measuring 8.5" x 11", is an albumin print of Fort Sumter, taken from a glass negative after the Civil War, with the following written in ink on the verso: "The interior of Fort Sumter, April 15, 1861. Taken the next day after Major Anderson surrendered to the Confederates." The photograph shows ten Confederate soldiers in the foreground with the newly raised Confederate flag flying from the flagpole. The photograph also shows the extensive damage to the fort, resulting from the 36-hour Confederate bombardment before Anderson and his force departed on April 14. This photograph is published Volume 1, page 57 of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. The condition is very fine with no apparent fading. 2) The second photograph, dated August 23, 1863, also an albumin print and measuring 6" x 9", is a war-date view of a virtually demolished Fort Sumter, with a Confederate flag flying overhead. Printed under the image is Photographed by Haas & Peale, Morris Island & Hilton Head, S.C.," with "No. 43.-Fort Sumter, August 23rd, 1863" to the right in typeset. The results of continuous Union bombardment of the fort are evident in this image of Fort Sumter reduced to rubble. Confederate forces held Fort Sumter until February 1865. On the verso of the photograph, the following is written in period ink: "Lt. Wm. E. Hall, A.D.C." Condition is fine with no fading.
Two large photographs in excellent condition of one of the most iconic forts in American history.
