Description
National Intelligencer (Washington, DC): Two Consecutive Issues regarding the Supreme Court and Forced Immigration of Native Americans Indian Tribes to Lands West of the Mississippi. March 10 and March 13, 1832, 4 pgs. each, 17 3/4" x 21". These 2 issues contain a long detailed printing of the decision by the US Supreme Court in the Cherokee Case, decided on March 3, 1832. In Worcester v. Georgia, the majority opinion written by John Marshall wrote that the Indian nations were "distinct, independent political communities retaining their original natural rights" and that the United States had acknowledged as much in several treaties with the Cherokees. This case arose from Georgia's attempts to assert authority over the Cherokee Nation, including passing laws that violated federal treaties and required missionaries like Samuel Worcester to obtain state licenses to reside on Cherokee land. President Jackson, a strong proponent of Indian removal, disagreed with the Court's decision and reportedly made the statement, "John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it."Condition: Disbound, scattered age. Else fine.
