Description

George Washington: Circa 1780 Desk Bronze. A finely crafted patinated bronze bust of George Washington, standing 5" tall sits a top a 5" tall gray marble plinth with gilt hardware, making the entire piece an elegant 10" in height. Clearly of French origin, this unsigned bust captures Washington's commanding presence with meticulous detail. The bust has an inscribed gilt plaque that reads, "Libertas," along with the inscription "S. E. George Washington/Général En Chef/Des Armées Des Etats/Unis De L'Amerique," a tribute to his role as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army during the Revolutionary War. The French text, especially the use of "S. E." before Washington's name, meaning Son Excellence ("His Excellency"), reflects the admiration and recognition Washington received from France, a key ally during America's fight for independence.

Condition: A superbly handsome and majestic piece in choice condition.
