Description

Antonio Sotomayor: Political Caricature Archive. From a green grinning Harry S Truman to a scene of Franklin D. Roosevelt on a roof dressed as Santa Claus to Richard Nixon's floating head, this sixty-eight piece archive by Antonio Sotomayor is whimsical with a touch of weird. The artist's signature of "Sotomayor" appears on many of the works, which range from black and white sketches to large pastel works. Politicians from the Democratic and Republican Parties are pictured, in addition to military and influential figures. These personalities include but are not limited to Ronald Reagan, Margaret Chase Smith, Wendell Willkie, Jimmy Carter, Martin Luther King Junior, Fiorello La Guardia, Adlai Stevenson, and many more. Some of these pieces have been matted and are held in place by tape at the top edges. Not including the size of mats, the smallest piece measures approximately 5" x 9", with the largest at 20" x 23.375". (The largest piece, including the mat, is 22" x 28".)

The Chilean-born artist was highly versatile, proving to be an adept illustrator, caricaturist, painter, muralist, and more. After immigrating to San Francisco in 1923 at the age of twenty-one, Sotomayor studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (now the San Francisco Art Institute) and would teach art at Mills College and the California School of Fine Art. One of his most impressive works was the Fountain of the Pacific. This high-relief terracotta map that measured 34' x 36' was made specifically for the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939. His work is honored in public museum collections, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco-the organization overseeing the de Young in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park-and the Museum of Modern Art.

Condition: There is some minor loss at the top edges on a couple of works, with additional foreign paper adhered at the bottom edges. Minimal scattered toning throughout. Adhesive residue is present at the bottom edge of one of the Truman pieces and on the backs of several artworks with tape remnants. Three pieces are matted, with the art taped at the top edges. The portrait of Al Smith has tape at the edges of the piece, not affecting Smith's features. Some minor soiling on the mats, and some of the art has uneven edges. These caricatures are in overall good condition and perfect for a charming, if not quirky, display.
