Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1860 Oversized Lincoln & Hamlin Campaign Flag With Family Provenance. No category of political campaign memorabilia is more highly prized than the 1860 and 1864 flags supporting Lincoln's candidacy, particularly when it comes to a visually stunning flag like this one, which instantly draws your attention from a distance! Its imposing size at 17" x 24" and bold colors with curved letters create a striking graphic statement seldom equaled by other name flags in this genre. Until recently, this flag was a highly regarded family heirloom. The original owner, Samuel Park, carried this flag in an 1860 Ohio torchlight parade supporting Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. It has been handed down and carefully preserved for the last six decades by one of his descendants. She is pictured in a 1959 newspaper clipping at age eight years with this flag framed in its current form hanging on the wall beside her and the story of her great-great-grandfather who once carried it! A Xerox of the newspaper clipping will accompany the lot. The flag is attractively housed in a 26" x 32" wood frame with a triple mat border. The frame has one small chip from the lower left back corner, not noticeable from the front. The flag has been examined out of the frame. It has been found to be lightly tacked with an adhesive to a tan-colored background mat board along the hoist edge and in a few other locations at the extreme corners and edges. It is not adhered in a continuous perimeter application and is likely the flag can be removed with some assistance from a professional conservator if one wished. The great condition and bold colors of the flag can be attributed to the careful preservation by the family. There is one minor printing flaw which appears as a line or streak of fabric through the letter "A" in Hamlin. The fabric simply became creased during the printing process. It is not a separation or tear. It is rare to acquire such a treasure with a great family history!
