Description

[Abraham Lincoln Assassination] Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth: Display with Signatures and Slabbed Wallpaper from Ford's Theater. You're in luck if you are looking for a true wow factor for your collection. This matted display contains President Abraham Lincoln's signature and John Wilkes Booth's, in addition to a slabbed "Swatch of Wallpaper From the President's Box At Ford's Theater." Despite that walls (or wallpaper) cannot talk, this swatch may have served as a silent witness to the heinous act, its deep rusty scarlet color perhaps an unfortunate foreshadowing of the blood to be spilled that night. The upper portion of the display features a large colorful reproduction image of John Wilkes Booth, pistol drawn as he approaches the Lincolns. On the far left of the lower portion of the display is a 7.5" x 2.875" (sight size) receipt dated November 16th, 1863, for the total rent amount of $118.75. It was signed by Booth on behalf of his mother, with his signature appearing toward the right side of the bottom edge reading, "J. Wilkes Booth." The signed note bearing Lincoln's signature reads, "Allow the bearer trans-/portation from Washing-/ ton to Pittsburgh, Penn./ A. Lincoln/ Nov. 3, 1864." (The text "M.L. Cullen" at the top right corner is written in an unknown hand.) The note measures 3.25" x 2". At the far right of the display is the swatch of wallpaper slabbed by CAG. The overall size of the slab measures 2.375" x 3.375", and the swatch measures 0.625" x 0.5". The overall size of the display measures 25.5" x 28.5".

An LOA from PSA/DNA authenticates the note written and signed in Lincoln's hand, and a COA from University Archives certifies Booth's signature.

Condition: Light toning is present on the note and document. The receipt has a minor ink smear, with a couple of tiny holes in the top right corner and a small tear at the top edge, affecting the "N" in November. The paper is possibly folded over for the display. Lincoln's note has a smudge toward the top left corner and possesses very light soiling. There is an unknown material, barely visible, from the top edge peeking up from the back. Items have not been inspected outside of the display, and it is unknown how items are held in place.
