Description
"Our First President. The Right Man in the Right Place."
Jefferson Davis: Inauguration Ambrotype. Ninth-plate [2" x
2.5"] ruby ambrotype portrait of "Jeff Davis" facing right,
encircled by seven stars representing the original Confederate
States in early 1861, inscribed "The Right Man in the Right Place.
Our First President". Faint tinting to cheeks. The slogan was no
doubt inspired by the inauguration of Jefferson Davis and Alexander
H. Stephens as provisional President and Vice-President of the
Confederate States in the first capital of the Confederacy,
Montgomery, Alabama, on February 18, 1861. This ambrotype is
similar in design to an albumen badge with blue rosette, of which
but a couple of examples have survived (The DeWitt Collection
specimen sold for $30,000 in our March 2022 Americana auction). The style of the lettering on the ambrotype suggests to us that it is very likely an original and almost certainly unique mock up for possible printed versions. However, the ambro has a richness and almost three-dimensional appearance which far surpasses anything which could be achieved in a printed iteration.
Certain political slogans have a resonance which makes them immortal in American history: "The Father of his Country," "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too", and "I Like Ike," and "Silent, Safe, and Sure," to cite a few. To this distinguished company we might well add "The Right Man in the Right Place." Indeed, this sentiment ,expressed at the birth of the Confederacy, would prove prophetic. Despite being faced with overwhelming Federal power, Davis managed to keep the fledgling republic afloat for fully four years, a feat which in retrospect seems almost unachievable.
Acquired by the consignor over twenty years ago from an Ohio auction this wonderful ambro has to rank among the very finest of Confederate artifacts, destined to hold a place of honor in the collection of its new owner.
Condition: Excellent condition, housed in an embossed paper case (cover detached, scattered loss).
