Henry Clay: Superb 14K Gold Brooch with Hand-Painted Portrait on Porcelain. Horizontal hinged pin on verso. Clay portrait is covered by very thin convex glass dome, 20 mm x 27 mm. Portrait brooches of this general type were made in limited numbers for most presidents and statesmen of the 1820s-1840s, but none more beautiful than this little gem. Pictured in Schlesinger's Running for President 1789-1896, p. 179 and, to our taste, one of the prize items of the auction.From the Collection of David and Janice Frent
