Description

Abraham Lincoln: Rail Splitter Parade Ax. 52" long wooden ax carried by members of the Lincoln marching club, the Wide Awakes, in the election of 1860. The head measures 12" x 14.5" and is painted black and a sandy color. The 42" handle is stained a reddish-brown. Possibly made of pine. Although this ax is not inscribed, it is identical in size and shape to another example in a private collection that is inscribed "Campaign of 1860" on the head. We can say, without reservation, that this was carried during the 1860 election.

Condition: One side of the handle has the outline of a handle of reduced size and shape. The bottom of the blade has a horizontal split going from side to side, repaired in the distant past.
