Description

Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, George Armstrong Custer & Others: A Superb Display of Autographs of Eminent Americans. What an effective presentation! The artwork is original pen, ink and watercolor, signed by the artist O. L. Pruden, and dated "Washington, D.C., 1866." In the center is a clipped signature of Lincoln, surrounded by signatures of Grant, Custer, Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of State William Seward, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Treasury Secretary Hugh McCulloch, Treasurer of the United States Francis Spinner, Senator Charles Sumner, Major General Quincy A. Gilmore and Judge Advocate General of the Army Joseph Holt.

The display was conceived as an award in appreciation of work done for the U. S. Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. The artist had originally come to Washington in 1862 as a fighting member of the 11th New Jersey Infantry. However, his talent with a pen led to quick recognition and a transfer to clerical duty, where he created official reports of such beauty that they rivaled steel engravings. Eventually Pruden would be transferred to the White House, where he served as a secretary creating masterful documents and commissions until his death in 1902.

This one-of-a-kind display is in excellent condition, with all the signatures strong and clear. It measures 9" x 12," effectively matted and custom framed in a period style frame measuring 12.25" x 20." From the Collection of the Late Edward C. Gillette.
