Description

Van Buren & Adams: Prohibitively Rare Free Soil "Grand National Banner". Small folio [9" x 13" sight] hand-colored lithograph published by Kellogg & Comstock of Hartford, titled "Free Soil Candidates For President and Vice President". It shows the former President and son of a president above vignettes of the Capitol and White House. Richly colored in rose, blue, green, yellow, cyan and powder blue. Kellogg & Comstock pirated the designs of Currier's Grand National Banners, sometimes surpassing the quality of the New York publisher. Their versions tend to appear in the market less frequently than their Currier counterparts. We've seen the Currier version a few times, but this is the first appearance, we believe, for the Kellogg & Comstock. Small loss to left border, of little consequence. Matted and framed. The Free Soil Party was a precursor to the Republicans.
