Description

Martin Van Buren: Anti-Harrison [Tippecanoe] Folk Art Banner. 67" x 44" linen banner with green stenciled border consisting of meandering flowers. There are two essential design elements, both political cartoons or commentaries. On the left, we see a sailboat whose captain wears a top hat (oversized and out of proportion), alongside five crew members. He declares: "This way my boys, Old Tip's Canoe is awlways [sic] rightside Up!" He appears to have spoken too soon, as the cartoon on the right shows the sinking ship with the caption "Oh! whare [sic] shall We fly for Protection!" Light damp stains, soiling, small holes & tears, loss at top right corner, but essentially intact. Found at the Swallow House, pictured on the website, in West Windsor, Vermont [see on-line image #2]. Folk art banners from this period are true museum pieces. This is the only pro-Van Buren example we know of.
