Description

George Washington: Rare Colonial Colored Engraving. 8" x 12.5" [sight] hand-colored engraving of Washington, with captions in English and French reading, in English, "George Washington Eqer/ General and Commander en Chief of the/ Continental Army/ in America." Very similar to the mezzotint engravings of military commanders that saw circulation in the 1770s. This is circa 1778-1780. An example resides at Winterthur. The engraving is credited to a fictitious artist by the publisher ("Champell Peintre de Williamsbourg"). The Winterthur web site declares "There is no record of a painter or draughtsman by the name of Alexander Campbell in Williamsburg at this time. Regarding the drawing of Washington Campbell is credited with having 'drawn from life', Washington himself wrote: 'Mr. Campbell, whom I never saw to my knowledge, has made a very formidable figure of the Commander-in-Chief, giving him a sufficient portion of terror in his countenance.'" Likely published in Paris. Housed in an 11.25" x 15.75" frame. The colors are pink, green, yellow and blue. Not examined out of frame. Excellent condition.
