Description
Abraham Lincoln: The Most Documented Lock of Lincoln Hair Extant. Small plastic sleeve (2" x 2") containing approximately eighteen snippets of hair from the head of Abraham Lincoln, affixed to a presentation page to an overall size of 8 1/2" x 11". Originally owned by Dr. Charles Sabin Taft who was the second surgeon to treat Lincoln on the evening of the assassination. Dr. Charles Leale, the first surgeon to arrive in aid of the dying President, originally removed it in order to gain access to the wound. This lock was given to Mrs. Lincoln who soon gave it to Dr. Taft.Charles Sabin Taft (1835-1900) was a young surgeon who attended the wounded at a Washington hospital. He has become acquainted with the President during Lincoln's visits to the recovering soldiers. Dr. Taft willed the hair to his son, Charles C. Taft. In 1905, Lincoln's secretary John Hay received six strands, mounting them in a ring presented to Theodore Roosevelt. Additional portions were sold to William H. Lambert in 1908 and later sold at the Anderson Galleries in 1914 to Henry C. Hines, who preserved them sealed until 1993.
