Description

Abraham Lincoln: Artist-Signed Deathbed Scene. 32 1/2" x 42 1/2" engraving depicting the deathbed scene at the Peterson House. It shows, with the exception of Mary Todd Lincoln, every person who visited the very cramped boarding house room where Abraham Lincoln expired on the morning of April 15, 1865. It is untitled, but printed in 1868 and signed in pencil in the lower right corner by the engraver, A. H. Ritchie, who also engraved the more commonly seen "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation". It is printed on chine-collé paper. This indicates an earlier impression with greater detail than later, unsigned versions printed on thicker paper. One minor horizontal crease at top, else in excellent condition. Housed in a recessed mahogany frame.
