Description
Early Railroads: A Highly Important Large, 1832-Dated Broadside. 19th century railroad posters and signs are avidly collected, and our research turned up only a single example pre-dating this December 25, 1832 New Jersey example. As the charming vignette shows, the cars ran on rails, but were horse-drawn rather than steam-propelled. The car depicted is a "double-decker," with what appears to be a canopy shielding the upper deck from the sun. The company offered a private car to parties of 20 or more, and declares that "It is the intention of the Directors to observe punctuality in running the Cars, and the Proprietors of Stages are requested to cooperate with them." Apparently running public transportation on a reliable schedule was a novel concept in 1832.The broadside measures 13.2" x 15.5" and was long ago laid down on board for stability. Overall display appearance is pleasing, although for accuracy we note minor condition issues. There are some scattered light brown spots, and a minor stain in the left border. Vestiges of a horizontal center crease which breaks the surface of the paper for several inches on the right. Very slight edge roughness; clearly the broadside is its full original size and has not been trimmed. An appealing and important display piece-and to our knowledge, the only known example-from the early days of American mass transportation. Printed at The Courier Office, Paterson, New Jersey.
Accompanying the broadside is a print from an 1835 sketch showing the rail line and the ticket office at the corner or Market and Main (then Congress) streets. Quite possibly this broadside was displayed there.
