Description
Abraham Lincoln: Superbly Documented Lock of Hair. The featured item in this lot is a lock of hair (30+ strands) that was removed from Lincoln's head by Surgeon General Joseph K. Barnes at the Peterson House, shortly after Lincoln was shot. The hair is dark brown in color with some silver strands mixed in. It is contained in the original tissue paper enclosure, as sent by Barnes to Mrs. Edwards Pierrepont of New York. The original transmittal envelope, addressed in Barnes's hand, along with his letter, accompanies the hair. Barnes writes: "Hair removed from the head of President Lincoln April 14th 65 in examination of the wound". We include a CDV of Barnes by R. W. Addis of Washington, D.C., a clipped signature of Barnes, and a 1977 note written by Pierrepont descendant Marguerite O'Connell, verifying its provenance and that "... it has remained in the immediate possession of our family since she [Mrs. Edwards Pierrepont] received it in May of 1865."Auction Info
