Description

Captain Edward P. Doherty: Assorted Ephemera. Among those associated with the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth, two names come to the forefront; namely, Boston Corbett and Edward Paul Doherty (1840-1897). Doherty commanded the soldiers who came upon Booth and Herold at Garrett's tobacco barn. He had been summoned by Lafayette C. Baker on April 24, 1865 and ordered to go after the conspirators, making contact two days later. Of course, the groundwork for the successful mission had been laid by others who went before him, all part of a team effort. This lot includes: 1) a CDV of Doherty titled "Capt. E. P. Doherty. Captor of Booth and Harold [sic]" with Bazinet of Montreal back mark and glowing description of the operation, 2) clipped signature inscribed "Edward P. Doherty/ 1st Lieut 16th NY Cav", 3) an 8" x 10" bifolium list of endorsements for Doherty's effort to be appointed Counsel at St. Petersburg, signed by Henry J. Raymond, James G. Blaine, J. P. Usher, Gen. C. C. Augur, Henry Wilson and other prominent politicians (separations at fold repaired internally with tissue tape), 4) a 7 ¾" x 10" letter, 1 1/2pp., possibly a rough draft written by Doherty, National Hotel [Washington, D.C.], February 19, 1866, to Secretary of War Stanton. Doherty recounts his capture and subsequent escape after the First Battle of Bull Run, how he and his command "... captured two of the assassins of our late President Lincoln...", and now requests that Stanton "confer upon me the Brevet Rank of Brig Genl of Vols. To date from my muster out which took place Oct. 3rd 1865". This request, if formally presented, was never granted. Ex: Sang Collection (Sotheby Parke Bernet, April 1978, lot #200).
