"The results on the Moon show that... most of the 12 moonwalkers -including Shepard - performed superbly as lunar geologists..."

"Principals of Terrestrial and Lunar Geology" Attendance Sheet Dated February 10, 1964, Featuring Twenty-Eight NASA Astronauts, Including Eight Moonwalkers with Accompanying Class Material. One page 8 x 10.5 inches, dated February 10, 1964. Matted and framed under Museum Glass to an overall 15.5 x 18 inches.

The attendance sheet features twenty-eight legendary names in spaceflight history. According to an included letter of correspondence with the class instructor Dr. Don Wilhelms: "We covered all aspects of terrestrial geology, not just those that might apply directly to the Moon. We had very high ambitions for the course, hoping to give the astronauts a degree-level education in geology because we thought they were supermen capable of absorbing it all. They were indeed damn good, tho' not quite supermen. Anyway the results on the Moon show that, after all the field training subsequent to our course, most of the 12 moonwalkers -including Shepard- performed superbly as lunar geologists." Names appear on sign-in sheet with added full name and NASA missions as follows:

The young astronauts that signed this list went on to accomplish feats once thought unimaginable by man. Included among the names are complete crews for Gemini 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12; Apollo 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, the first and last man to walk on the lunar surface, and, unfortunately, five young men who perished in training before they were able to travel to space.

The original "Schedule and Outline of Courses in Geology / Astronaut Training Program" document, dated January 8, 1964, is among the multiple provenance items accompanying this lot. Also included is an extensive ALS from Dr. Wilhelms, dated March 8, 2005, describing his experience as instructor of this group. Copies of correspondence recounting their recollection of the course training are included from Bill Anders, Neil Armstrong, Alan Bean, Walt Cunningham, Richard Gordon, and James Lovell. One of the more historically significant documents we have had the privilege to offer that captures a time when the U.S. was steadfast in its pursuit of a manned lunar landing, which eight of these individuals ultimately accomplished. Signatures are in the hand of the listed astronaut unless otherwise noted.

COA from Gerry Montague verifying signatures as described.

Condition: Fine.

Provenance: The sign-in page was retained by Dr. King, who also taught as part of the astronaut training program. A photocopy of the envelope Dr. King used to store the sheets in with handwriting describing his refusal to sell them to a collector in 1988 is also included.
