8vo. Publisher's beige cloth stamped in black and terra cotta. Color pictorial dust jacket, possibly later issue without the printed price where usually found. Custom quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION, second issue, PRESENTATION COPY. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "For [space left blank] / with admiration / John Steinbeck." Second issue with page nine reset with the exclusion of nine words and the bullet removed from page number on page 88.

Condition: Staining to bottom of rear cover. Abrasions and glue remnants to front pastedown. Textblock with a few scattered spots. Dust jacket decoratively clipped, somewhat toned and scuffed, chips and a few short tears, separations starting along front spine panel and front flap, a few spots, other wear.
