1955.8vo. Publisher's cream cloth, spine lettered in brown and black; original dust jacket.
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO SAMMY DAVIS, JR., on the front free endpaper: "For Sammy Davis, Jr. / A great artist who / sings song into life and / life into song. Godspeed all the / way, from your friend, / Budd Schulberg / Sept. 9, 1955-". ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR (at a later date) to actor Joe Pantoliano on the title-page: "For Joe Pantoliano, Here we go again. It's an honor to meet his distinguished son of Hoboken. I've enjoyed our talk today. Here's to many more. With my admiration and warmest wishes / Budd Schulberg / 5/5/06."
Schulberg wrote the 1954 Academy Award-winning screenplay for On The Waterfront which won Best Picture and seven other Oscars. A WONDERFUL DOUBLE-ASSOCIATION COPY, linking the author with two great entertainers across two generations.
Condition: Some slight toning to spine and board edges; minor soiling. Unclipped dust jacket (priced $3.95 and dated "9/55" on front flap) with minor wear and rubbing at edges; lamination peeled away in sections; a few small pale stains; light soiling; minor toning at edges on verso.
Provenance: Sammy Davis, Jr. (presentation inscription; and with his ownership "signature" stamp on title-page [inverted]); Joe Pantoliano (presentation inscription).
